Building with Remote Control Plane Kits

Building your own airplane that can be flown and carry passengers is not a new thing and this hobby field has been around for many years. There are as many different kit-build aircraft as there are models of manufactured airplanes and they come in all shapes and sizes. For many, however, flying is not something that is a common skill and a pilot’s license is hard to come by. For those that seek the thrill of flying and the challenge of building an airplane, there is an alternative, Remote Control Plane kits.

What are Remote Control Plane Kits?

Just like model car and airplane kits, remote control plane kits are pre-built kits that contain parts and pieces that allow beginners to follow instructions and end up with a working, flying model of their favorite airplane, a helicopter, or even a UFO. There is a limitation to the use of the word “beginner” in this context, however.

Even old-fashioned plastic model cars took some skill and experience to build properly. The task is made much more complex and challenging by the addition of engine parts, radio equipment, and controller gear. Add to that the understanding of aeronautics that is needed to ensure that the result flies properly and it is not likely that someone would just run out and buy remote control plane kits and get started.

First Things First

The first thing that one should learn is how to fly one of these scale model airplanes, whether kit built or not. Almost every serious RC hobbyist, especially RC airplane hobbyists, is a member of a club. RC airplane clubs are the most organized and numerous of these organizations and are vital for beginner RC airplane enthusiasts. Instruction is one of the most important aspects of these organizations as it is impossible to fly without being taught how to fly with a remote control.

This is a skill that takes some time to learn well enough not to crash your expensive new RC plane. After a few months of flying and learning the basics, hobbyists can begin to consider building with remote control plane kits. Many club members will have a great deal of experience and are oftentimes willing to share pointers and tips with beginners.

Even with all of the mentoring and instruction, the task of building remote control plane kits should be taken one step at a time. The instructions should be studied carefully before beginning and there needs to be a lot of planning as well. The first kit should not be rushed, as this can result in a plane that is unbalanced and will fly poorly or even crash on the first flight.

If the assembly is not followed correctly, the plane may not be strong enough to withstand the stress of the motor. Much can go wrong and the experience and skill of other club members will ensure that these mistakes are avoided. Once the kit is built and ready to go the thrill of flying a remote-controlled airplane is a unique experience and great fun!
